Product information

Ornamental onion Purple Sensation (Allium) is a real eye-catcher: imposing, spherical flower heads in deep purple that stand out like stars above the greenery. The plant blooms in May and June, just when many other spring bulbs have already finished flowering, thus extending the colourful period in your planter. Allium is also an excellent bee plant. The bulbs are of top quality (bulb size 10/12).

Flowering period: May–Jun

Ideal location: Sunny

Height: 60–80 cm

Fully grown after: one spring after planting in autumn

Winter hardy: Yes

Best planting time: Sep–Nov

Plant allium among lower-growing perennials; they camouflage the withering leaves of the allium after flowering.

This allium grows on a long, sturdy stem (60–80 cm) that takes up little floor space, creating a striking vertical accent even on a small balcony. The bulbs love full sun, which balconies often have in abundance. Winter hardy as they are, the bulbs can withstand the cold of a pot on an open balcony without extra protection.

Does allium come back every year?

Yes, ornamental onion is hardy and perennial; the bulbs return year after year and often spread on their own.

Is allium suitable for a balcony in a pot?

Yes, provided it is in a sufficiently deep pot in a sunny spot; the long stems create a beautiful vertical effect.

Does allium attract bees?

Yes, the globe-shaped flower heads are full of nectar and are very attractive to bees, just when many other spring bulbs have already finished blooming.
